Neuschwanstein Castle
Neuschwanstein Castle (Schloss Neuschwanstein) is a breathtaking 19th century Romanesque Revival castle on a rugged hill above the village of Hohenschwangau near Füssen in southwest Bavaria. The castle is probably the most famous one in the world. The palace was commissioned in 1869 by Ludwig II of Bavaria as an homage to Richard Wagner's operas, imitating a knights castle during the Middle Ages.
The palace was intended as a personal refuge for the reclusive king, but it was opened to the paying public immediately after his death in 1886. King Ludwig II never saw his completed dream-castle, since he died before it was finished. However, what remains today is one of the most beautiful ballrooms in the world with excellent acoustics for concerts.
The palace is known the world over and was the inspiration for Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty Castle.
There is another castle that lies below the castle of Neuschwanstein. Hohenschwangau Castle (Schloss Hohenschwangau) is a 19th century palace in southern Germany. It was the childhood residence of King Ludwig II of Bavaria and was built by his father, King Maximilian II of Bavaria. It was erected from the ruins of a 12th century castle and was the King’s family residence during summer. This was the place where King Ludwig II grew up.
In case you want to spend more time in this wonderful, picturesque part of Bavaria and also venture around in the nature of southern Germany, we are happy to organize a stay in a wellness hotel.
