Linderhof Palace
Linderhof Palace (Schloss Linderhof) is the smallest of the three castles. It was built in a French Rococo style in the 19th century. King Ludwig II used it as his hunting residence. It is the only castle that was finished while King Ludwig was still alive. It was the favourite palace of the fairy-tale King. It was also the palace where he spent the most time in his short life, since he died at the age of 40.
He was very proud of the extensive park area at the palace, with its fairy tale, moorish kiosk, the impressive Venus Grotto and its manmade waterfall. The park also has a lake where the King staged Wagner operas for his guests.
After visiting the Linderhof Palace you will have the opportunity to visit the “Weihnachtsdorf” (romantic Christmas village) of Oberammergau. Oberammergau is famous for its wood carvings, its exhibition of the holy crиche and its picturesquely painted balconies (Lüftlmalerei).
The Oberammergau Passion Play has been performed by the inhabitants of the village of Oberammergau since the Plague of 1633. They vowed to stage the play every 10 years if they were spared the effects of the “Black Death.”
