Herrenchiemsee Castle
The Jewel in the Crown of the Bavarian Sea: Herrenchiemsee Castle
Herrenchiemsee Castle was built on the island “Herreninsel” in the lake of Chiemsee. It is a very ostentatious castle built in the style of the famous French castle of Versaille. Ludwig II had it built solely to honor the French Bourbon Kings (so named because of the Bourbon castle residence in the old countryside of Bourbonnais in France).
Herrenchiemsee was the last and most expensive project Ludwig II undertook. The castle was never completed. You will be guided through the different rooms of the castle, including the King’s private residence, as well as through the baroque park surrounding the castle.
We highly recommend going for a stroll once around the island, as the King did in former times. It is a 6km easily walkable and beautiful trail.
By boat you will then cruise to the next island – “Fraueninsel.” There you can enjoy lunch, stroll around the idyllic island and visit the original cloister of the Benedictines that was built around 1000 A.D in a Roman style.
